Executive Chef Ben Deinken together with Nevada Youth Empowerment Program (NYEP), an innovative, community-based Reno youth service provider that assists homeless young people, will be hosting a special “Dining in the Dark” event in an effort to raise money and awareness for youth in transition. Guests will enjoy dinner while completely blind folded, forced to use all other senses. “Dining in the Dark” is a unique sensory awareness experience that takes guests on an unforgettable journey in the dark in an effort to shine a light on youth suffering from homelessness.

Chef Ben Deinken’s dark dining experience has all the makings of the most unique dining experience you'll ever have. Part fine dining, part interactive theater. "Dining in the Dark," includes numerous small plates for which diners are blindfolded to invite sensory exploration of the food and to intensify its flavors. The night will consist of 6 courses with wine. Guests are encouraged to "Dine in the Dark" and put blind folds on for a unique sensory taste experience.
The proceeds raised from the evenings experience will be donated to NYEP to be used for an intergenerational affordable housing project to serve low-income young people and seniors. The monies raised will be used towards a new project to house young adults and seniors.

The fundraiser is created to assist with NYEP’s successful residential program for women aged 17-24 who otherwise would be homeless. The project will infill and rehab the existing property, and provide affordable housing for young adults transitioning from homelessness or foster care, and seniors who are struggling on a fixed income into affordable housing options.
“The young women who participate in the nine-to-18-month NYEP Community Living Program are empowered with the knowledge, skills, resources and support they need to establish themselves as contributing young adults,” said Monica Dupea, Executive Director for NYEP”
"Without the help of individuals such as Chef Ben Deinken and other community stakeholders, we would be unable to take get this project to the next phase,” said Dupea.
Monica Dupea, Executive Director for NYEP is confident the nonprofit can continue to raise funds through community giving that will match the Jacobs Family Foundation for Children donation given earlier this year to work on the creation of a 20-unit intergenerational affordable housing project.
“The organization is also working with other housing agencies to develop a strategic plan to provide youth housing” said DuPea.
This initiative would target extremely low-income graduates of the Community Living Program as well as seniors. The young women and the seniors would share the NYEP housing project with young graduates assisting seniors with maintenance, shopping, and other tasks and in turn seniors providing mentorship.
