Dopamine is part of the brain’s reward system, and over time, as opioid use disorder progresses, the brain stops naturally producing this chemical. Opioids become the only thing that makes the person feel good.

MAT works by reducing the intensity of withdrawal symptoms, like muscle aches, watery eyes, runny nose, and intense anxiety. Medication will also improve cravings and reduce the likelihood of a return to use. This way, patients can focus on other parts of recovery, like therapy and improving their quality of life.
