British Office Taipei Visits Taiwan’s Hualien County Mayor Hsu Chen-Wei, Establishing Friendly Communication Channels

Hualien, Taiwan (Merxwire) – A delegation from the British Office Taipei, including Head of Cross Strait and Regional Security Matt Nottingham and Head of the British Assistance and Services Gareth Howell, visited Hualien County Mayor Hsu Chen-Wei in Taiwan on November 14. The meeting centered around discussions on emergency assistance channels for British nationals, disaster prevention capabilities in Hualien County, and net-zero strategies. Both sides engaged in a fruitful exchange, and Mayor Hsu warmly welcomed British visitors to experience the natural and cultural beauty of Hualien.

Mayor Hsu highlighted Hualien County Government’s recent focus on environmental sustainability, aligning with the United Nations SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) in various public service projects. The collaboration between local government and civil society has been instrumental in building a social safety net, ensuring safety and prosperity for residents. Hualien, being a major tourism county, has seen steady enhancement in firefighting capabilities and equipment. The county government plans to continue collaborating with local tourism operators to conduct various emergency response drills, accumulating more disaster response capacity and experience to ensure the safety of visitors.

During the meeting, Mayor Xu specially presented each guest with an Pangcah ‘adofot’ (Indigenous lover’s bag), inviting them to next year’s Joint Harvest Festival. She also highlighted Hualien’s year-round unique tourism activities, welcoming visitors to explore its towns for a travel experience combining relaxation, scenic beauty, and cultural immersion.
