Calls for Shared Responsibility, Ongoing Education, and State Action to Address Illegal Fireworks
In a time when many communities across California are working to restore a greater sense of connection and trust, TNT® Fireworks is launching its 2025 public safety campaign with a hopeful message: responsible celebration has the power to bring people together. As families and neighborhoods prepare to celebrate the Fourth of July, TNT Fireworks is encouraging all Californians — in every community, from every background — to celebrate safely, legally, and in ways that reflect our shared values of freedom, unity, and mutual respect.
“Backyard celebrations using State Fire Marshal-Approved, Safe and Sane Fireworks offer more than just entertainment,” said Carson Anderson, President of TNT Fireworks. “They offer a moment of togetherness — a way for families and neighbors to enjoy time with each other, celebrate their community, and reconnect with the ideals that have defined our country since its founding.”
A Legacy of Safety, Partnership, and Public Service
Since 1989, TNT Fireworks has helped support thousands of nonprofit organizations throughout California by providing a safe and legal fundraising opportunity during the Independence Day season. In 2025, over 2529 nonprofits in 294 communities are projected to raise the revenue to fund their critical programs and services through their partnerships with TNT — supporting everything from food banks and youth sports to mental health programs, after-school care, veterans services, and more.
Just as importantly, TNT has remained a leader in California fireworks safety education and public awareness for over 35 years, with an unmatched track record that includes:
- Producing public safety campaigns featuring political decision makers, performers, and other widely respected voices.
- Removing wire-core sparklers from the market in 1991 — a move the State Board of Fire Services called “the boldest in fire service history.”
- Launching the Illegal Fireworks Amnesty Program, “Private Eyes”, “You Light It, We Write It!” and “Dangerous Games” campaigns, and a statewide school-based safety program recognized by districts and public agencies statewide.
- Partnering with the State Fire Marshal to fund and expand the state’s official fireworks safety and education program.
- Developing the Nail’em mobile app, enabling Californians to report illegal fireworks activity directly to authorities.
- Co-sponsoring SB 839, allowing local jurisdictions to impose administrative fines for illegal fireworks possession and use.
- Advocating for stronger local fireworks ordinances with higher administrative fines and enforcement cost recovery.
- Collaborating with local anti-illegal fireworks groups across the state to address community-specific issues.
“TNT Fireworks doesn’t just talk about safety — we invest in it,” Anderson added. “Our public education efforts, enforcement partnerships, and strong local relationships are built to protect both people and property — and to ensure that celebration doesn’t come at the cost of public safety.”
Keeping Californians Safe: Addressing Illegal Fireworks
While state-approved fireworks are legal and highly regulated under California law, the growing presence of illegal fireworks continues to pose a significant safety risk. These dangerous products have led to fires, injuries, and community disruption.
City councils and public safety leaders are calling for Governor Gavin Newsom to authorize the California State Fire Marshal and Attorney General to form a joint California–Nevada Illegal Fireworks Task Force and an Interstate Compact aimed at stopping the cross-border trafficking of illegal fireworks.
A 2023–2024 San Francisco Grand Jury report underscored the need for state action, noting:
“The firework explosions booming around the city are more likely from fireworks that are illegal in California, but which are for sale in the neighboring state of Nevada.”
2025 California Campaign: "Celebrate Safely. Celebrate Together."
This year’s campaign carries a simple message: safety and celebration go hand in hand. TNT encourages every California resident to take a few easy steps to keep their family and community safe:
- Know the law. Know the time. Use only legal fireworks, and only during permitted hours.
- Soak and cool used fireworks overnight in water.
- Dispose of safely — place soaked, used fireworks in a non-combustible container away from structures and dry brush.
- Stay alert. Stay respectful. Use fireworks only in designated areas, and always under adult supervision.
“Responsible celebration is one way we can all do our part to make this holiday season safe and joyful,” said Anderson. “We encourage everyone to take that responsibility seriously — not just for themselves, but for their neighbors and their entire community.”
A Tradition Worth Honoring
As TNT reflects on more than three decades of public service and safety advocacy, Anderson reminds us that “July 4th isn’t just about fireworks or parades. It’s about remembering who we are as a people — and choosing to celebrate that, together.”
