A native of Victoria, British Columbia, Callaghan spent a good portion of his youth pursuing sports at an advanced level, excelling at hockey and rugby in particular. After high school, he played in the Western Hockey League (WHL) Junior A tier, and earned the Commissioner's Scholarship from that organization. On the strength of that award, Callaghan attended the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia, where he earned a degree in Sports Management and Business.
