Houston Veteran and Healthcare Professional Proposes $1 Million Worth & Wellness Initiative to Combat Food Deserts and Strengthen Community Health

Houston, Texas - March 16, 2026 - USAF Veteran, healthcare professional, nonprofit founder, and community leader Sonia White has submitted a proposal to the 18th Congressional District requesting $1 million in federal community investment to launch the Worth & Wellness Community Garden and Youth Agriculture Initiative—a bold program designed to address food deserts, improve public health, and empower youth across Houston.

Across many Houston neighborhoods, thousands of families live in areas with limited access to fresh fruits and vegetables. This lack of access contributes to rising rates of diabetes, heart disease, and other preventable illnesses that disproportionately affect underserved communities.

The Worth & Wellness Initiative seeks to change that reality by creating a network of community healing gardens and youth agriculture education programs that will give residents the tools, knowledge, and resources needed to grow healthy food and build stronger communities.

“As a veteran and healthcare professional, I have seen how the absence of healthy food options and safe community spaces can impact families for generations,” Sonia said. “This initiative is about restoring health, dignity, and opportunity—giving communities the ability to grow their own food while creating environments that support wellness, education, and hope.”

The initiative will establish community healing gardens that serve as living classrooms, where youth, families, veterans, and seniors can learn sustainable agriculture practices while improving both physical and mental well-being.

Key components of the initiative include:

• Community healing gardens in underserved neighborhoods

• Youth agriculture and leadership training programs

• Fruit and pecan tree planting initiatives for long-term food sustainability

• Workshops teaching families how to grow food in backyards, patios, and apartment spaces

• Therapeutic outdoor environments that support mental health and wellness

Research shows that community gardening programs significantly improve nutrition, mental health, and community engagement, while also providing young people with hands-on learning experiences that foster responsibility, leadership, and environmental awareness.

The initiative also seeks to provide supportive learning environments for youth with ADHD, autism, and other developmental challenges, where nature-based programs have been shown to improve focus, emotional well-being, and confidence.

If funded, the Worth & Wellness Initiative will:

• Establish multiple community healing garden sites across Houston

• Train hundreds of youth in agriculture and leadership development

• Educate thousands of families on sustainable food practices

• Increase access to fresh produce in communities affected by food deserts

• Promote healthier lifestyles through prevention, nutrition, and wellness education

Community leaders across Houston are expressing support for the initiative, recognizing its potential to become a national model for urban agriculture, community wellness, and food sustainability.

Sonia White is supported by esteemed public officials and leaders such as State Rep. Ron Reynolds, Constable Smokie Phillips, Judge Maria T. Jackson and more.

“This initiative represents a powerful opportunity for Houston to lead the nation in innovative solutions that address food insecurity and community health,” Sonia said. “By investing in prevention, education, and sustainability, we can build healthier communities and create opportunities that will impact generations.”
